Bendik og Årolilja

Bendik og Årolilja is one of the oldest surviving medieval ballads in Norway. The ballad describes Bendik, who falls in love with the kings daughter, Årolilje. Since Bendik is a commoner, this outrages the king, and he has Bendik executed. As a result, Årolilje dies of her heartbreak, and the lovers are buried on opposite sides of the churchyard. Lilies grow from their graves, intertwining over the roof of the church.
